Is the 定期券 (teiki) worth it?
Choose your regular route and how many days you commute per month. We calculate whether a monthly pass is cheaper than paying per trip. Covers JR, Tokyu, Keikyu and Tokyo Metro. 2026 prices.
Check the station machine or the Suica app for your exact pass price.
Only count days you actually take the train.
6-month pass gives the biggest discount (JR: ~59% savings).
TIP: OFFPEAK PASS (JR)
JR offers the "オフピーク定期券" with a 15% discount on the standard pass if you avoid peak hours (7:30-9:00 at most stations). If you can skip those hours, it's the cheapest option.
How the 定期券 works in Japan
The 定期券 (teikiken) is Japan's commuter pass. Unlike unlimited network passes in some countries, it covers only the specific route between the two stations you specify when buying it.
Pass types: 1, 3, or 6 months. The 3-month pass equals roughly 2.86 times the monthly price; the 6-month pass, about 4.9 times. The 6-month discount is significant but requires paying upfront.
Offpeak pass (JR): JR East offers the オフピーク定期券, 15% cheaper than the standard pass in exchange for not using it during peak hours. Peak time is typically 7:30-9:00 depending on the station. If you have flexible hours, it's the most economical option.
Who pays? In Japan it's common for employers to cover commuting costs up to a monthly limit (交通費支給). Even if your company covers it, this calculator helps you decide whether to request a monthly or quarterly pass.
Where to buy: At station machines with your Suica or PASMO card, or at JR counters. The pass is loaded directly onto your IC card.
Prices updated May 2026. JR East raised fares on March 14, 2026 (first increase since privatization in 1987). Always verify your exact route price at the station machine.
